We are delighted to announce “more overall”, a group exhibition bringing together three important figures of the Icelandic art scene from different generations: Ingólfur Arnarsson, showing his work internationally since the eighties, Guðný Rósa Ingimarsdóttir, Icelandic artist based in Brussels, and Hildigunnur Birgisdóttir, who currently represents Iceland in the 60th Venice Art Biennale.

Ingólfur Arnarsson’s work is highly precise and dense. In a methodic tracing of lines on paper, matter is superimposed on the support, its mass and composition blending with the surroundings and architecture. Only with a closer look can the slight nuances and patterns of the layered structures appear to the onlooker’s eye.

Such stratification in the work is similarly inherent to Guðný Rósa Ingimarsdóttir’s corpus, composed of significantly chosen layers. The artist works by means of thorough repetition, constantly going back and forth, carefully selecting and altering the diverse materials that she works with. The work builds itself slowly, sometimes taking years; each line traced or erased has equal value, the remaining elements have the same strength as those removed. Her compositions convey rhythm and silence, transforming their surroundings into breathing spaces.

It is in the same manner that Hildigunnur Birgisdóttir brings together collected fragments, in an almost archeological dig of personal archives. Her practice magnifies absurd and often useless everyday items of mass consumption, presenting them in new mediums and scales in a sublimation of the banal. Continually questioning the relationship between perception and reality, the artist transforms small objects and plays with the notion of familiarity.

This exhibition is organised in collaboration with I8 gallery, based in Reykjavik
and with the support of the Icelandic embassy in Brussels
