The first solo show of Belgian painter Gauthier Hubert at Irène Laub Gallery, entitled “tempête dans un verre d’eau”, presents a selection of recent portraits and landscapes. These oils on canvas and watercolors are not linked by a singular theme, but by a subtle network of references: each work created by Gauthier Hubert influences the following ones and generates new paintings through thematic hints, formal connections or chromatic resonances. The works were selected instinctively among those families, as they were created in the studio, and each carries its own story.
In addition to the initial presentation at the opening, a new painting will be added each week, adding to the dialogue and providing new confrontations.
The exhibition “tempête dans un verre d’eau” is closely related to Gauthier Hubert’s project at the Botanique museum (Brussels, BE), which will explore the genealogical structure of his work through the years. Starting in September, two distinct exhibitions will follow each other: “réunions familiales (un goût de liberté)” analyses twenty years of painting with an emphasis on the artist’s distinctive creative process and “…fils de… (Les retrouvailles)” will develop a new presentation of portraits and explore a different family tree.
