17 February 2024 marked the 60th anniversary of the signing of the bilateral agreement between Belgium and Morocco on the recruitment of labour, which marked the beginning of the official arrival of Moroccan migrants in Belgium, with the aim of helping the economic recovery of post-war Belgium.
To commemorate this 60th anniversary, Moussem Nomadic Arts Centre, based in Brussels, in collaboration with various institutional and independent partners is organizing a series of events in Morocco, both in the cities of Tangier (Oct 4-25) and Oujda (Nov 1-30). The choice of Tangier and Oujda for this event seems highly appropriate, given that the Moroccan community in Belgium is mainly drawn from the northern and eastern regions.
Moussem Belgica – Transnational Stories will feature three artistic expressions: a visual arts exhibition, literature and cinema. The aim is to showcase the work of Belgian-Moroccans, or Moroccan artists who have spent time in Belgium, in a range of artistic disciplines, the product of the multiple cross-fertilisations that characterise the new generation of artists in an increasingly globalised world.
