Using the thematic question of “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2025”, the thoughts and creative works of the artists of the Main Exhibition are presented through connected spatial arrangements, embedded structures, and folded forms, initiating a dialogue of differentiation between self and others across different fields and bridging the domestic and foreign peripheries. This will also allow to explore and identify the culture and art of Macao by transcending geographical boundaries and barriers of cultural identity.
As the piece’s main sculptural body, the concrete bricks are perhaps one of the most universal symbols of contemporary society in daily life. Their precariousness hides a vast landscape of nature and once-uninhabited land, now enclosed by the floors of a capitalist and fast-paced world. It is through the small glimpses into dismantled bricks that the memory of such time is recalled, unveiling old postcards dating back to the beginning of the 20th century that depict idyllic and untouched places on Earth (such as mountains, rivers, forests, and sunsets). These images preserve the sublime beauty of nature and, in contrast with their display, are evidence of the circumstance to which most living things have been submitted – individuals hidden below layers of pre-made, standardized objects. The postcards act not simply as a reminder of another time; instead, they simultaneously suggest the idea of correspondence: something that can be shared and kept as a special, unique message with the ability to travel in time and space – perhaps manifesting one’s attempt to be connected even through the hardest turns of events.
