Sandra Lecoq belongs to a generation that takes up the challenge of painting from the object side. Her work, while not using the traditional tools, supports and mediums of painting, stems simultaneously from drawing and colour. Recalling the analytical gestures of deconstruction of the painting initiated by Supports-Surfaces, she braids and sews her studio rags, then turns to various multicoloured fabrics in place of the stretcher and the canvas. The classical elements of painting such as background, form, drawing and colour are present, but at the same time she breaks away from pictorial conventions by means of superimpositions, interweaving of fabrics, textile collages and seams. The reflection on the spacialisation of her work also plays an important role.
The use of so-called feminine domestic techniques in her work immediately affirms the artist’s interest in questions of sexual identity. Drawing on her relational, familial and social experience, she develops an artistic language that draws its forms from the intimate. Sandra Lecoq’s practice often seeks to deconstruct the duality and social conceptions that create power relations between the sexes.
Sandra Lecoq is a DNSEP graduate from the Villa Arson in Nice (FR). Her work has been presented in various French institutions, including the MAMAC and 109 in Nice, the Collection Lambert in Avignon, a solo exhibition at the Vénissieux art centre in 2020 and a duo with Tatiana Wolska at the Yvetot art centre in 2021. His works are present in the collection of the Frac Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
