ADELHEID DE WITTE

Born in 1982 in Gent (BE)
Lives and works in Gent (BE)

Adelheid De Witte’s practice can be seen as the continuation of the Belgian surrealistic tradition, but in a contemporary framework. Having worked first as a figurative painter, she found herself increasingly drawn to the liberating possibilities provided by abstraction. In a sensible approach to light and shadow, abstract landscapes and cloudy structures find themselves interrupted by line figures and colour swatches. By counterposing geometric elements with her disordered gestural paintwork, she fosters an experience of equilibrium that gives the works a powerful physical presence. The vivid, almost shrill painted edges are an integral part of Adelheid de Witte’s composition. Their angular rigidity counterbalancing the effusion at their core. The large format of her canvases gives way for the landscape to stretch and fade out, as the boundaries of the two-dimensional surface are pushed further away. Her technique of scratching and rubbing the painterly surface creates a suggestive resonance that appears to both dissolve and solidify across the plane. These more centralised areas resonate in a cloud of emotional perceptiveness; articulating the inexpressible and challenging the viewer to look deeper and with ever greater penetration.

Adelheid De Witte is represented by Barbé Gallery.
