A large marble sculpture forms a horizon line at the level of the artist’s gaze. The piece consists of two slabs of Belgian and Italian marble, pressed against each other in a seemingly unstable balance, as if they could fall at any moment as one visibly pushes the other aside. The work is about perspective, but also about the notion of time and the precarious nature of geological landscapes, evoked by rocks formed under the earth over thousands of years.
Two photographs of seascapes show a slight temporal shift: a first photograph of a wave is printed in a monochromatic shade of blue and a second, in black and white on the back of the glass in the frame, floats in front of it. This photo of the same wave was taken a fraction of a second later than the first. Because of the space between the images, the two shots of the waves gradually shift in our perception as we move in front of the work.
Finally, this solo exhibition brings together a series of 20 works on paper from a three-day walk by the artist along the Belgian coast, from Knokke to De Panne, during which he took photographs while walking. In each case, the photographs are composed of half sea and half sky with a horizon line separating the two. In these «Souvenirs», he captures a fleeting moment at a specific place and time, identified by the title, and then splits the photograph into image and color. The tones present in the image are meticulously mixed in oil paint and ordered from lighter to darker in a grid of 16×16 color tones.
