PEDRO A.H. PAIXÃO

[ARTIST IN FOCUS]

Through large cycles of monochromatic graphic works dedicated to Central Africa, Pedro A.H. Paixão addresses our current perception of colonial trauma and the possibilities of reparation. His drawings evoke complex histories of struggle and emancipation, like the confrontation between an imposed Colonial History still operating today, and the many resistances lead by autochthonous stories. The artist presents visual works where things are felt and though anew, not under the trial of history and morality but under their own light, breaking preconceptions and misconceptions apart.

Winner of the prestigious Navigator Art on Paper international prize, Pedro A.H. Paixão held his first major comprehensive exhibition at CIAJG, Guimarães (PT) in 2018. His work is part of several international collections such as Benetton Foundation (IT), CAC Málaga Collection (ES), Carmona and Costa Foundation (PT), PLMJ Collection (PT), among others.

"If we must draw, it is because sight is always the opposite of recognition. This is why the choice of the monochrome is justified: in order to see, and to draw, it is necessary to replace and flatten everything, to deny the ontological differences or, more precisely, it is necessary to transform what seems to be an inequality in nuance, into a difference in intensity of color intensity."
            - Emanuele Coccia
